About Us

The Tule Basin Management Zone (TBMZ) group includes those dischargers that have selected to be regulated under the Pathway B Nitrate Compliance by the Central Valley Water Board regulatory requirements within the Tule Subbasin and a small portion of Kern County. The TBMZ is responsible to comply with the requirements of the Central Valley Salinity Alternatives for Long-Term Sustainability (CV-Salts) Nitrate Control Program.

A part of compliance with the Nitrate Control Program, the TBMZ has prepared an Early Action Plan to begin implementation of providing availability of safe drinking water for residents within the Management Zone whose drinking supply has been contaminated by nitrates.

TBMZ Mission Statement

The TBMZ mission is to educate the residents within the Management Zone of the various locations of current nitrate contamination in drinking water based on monitoring and data review, to provide outreach materials, and to provide access to safe drinking water for residents whose drinking water supply has been contaminated by nitrates.

Nitrate Program Overview

CV-SALTS has developed the Central Valley’s Nitrate Control Program to address historical nitrate problems affecting groundwater, which is a main source of drinking water in rural and disadvantaged communities throughout the Tule Subbasin. The Nitrate Control Program’s three primary goals consist of:

  1. Provide safe drinking water, particularly for residents in nitrate affected areas, as quickly as possible
  2. Reduce nitrate impacts to water supplies
  3. Restore groundwater quality where reasonable and feasible
